Vision, Mission and Objectives

BSMD Vision

To put standardization in the service of the society, and the service of industrial, economic and administrative development of the country and to promote the concept and practice of quality, productivity improvement and the active participation in international standardisation.

BSMD Mission

1. To harmonize the national standards and technical regulations with the international standards with a view to facilitate and boost the trade exchanges and promote the international trade.

2. To improve productivity, quality and market access for businesses and industries, protect consumer interests and enhance safety, health and environmental conditions for Bahrain through the use of the appropriate technical regulations and standards.

3. To tighten control over imports and ensure conformity of products traded and offered for sale to their related technical regulations.

4. To spread the concepts of quality and encourage the adoption of international standards in order to improve the quality of national products.

5. To enhance the competitiveness of Bahraini economy by providing a national system of traceability of measurement for industry, trade and other users, and raising the level of measurement technology in Bahrain.

6. To ensure that a uniform and accurate system of weights and measures is used in Bahrain thereby protecting the interests of consumers and traders.

BSMD Objectives:

BSMD aims at fulfilling the following objectives:

1. Preparation of Technical Regulations, standards and conformity assessment procedures for Bahrain through a national program, based on regional and international standards.

2. Increase the quality performance and productivity in Bahrain.

3. Establish the basis on which conformity certificates , quality and conformity marks are issued in order to enhance the quality of national products.

4. Control and monitor the quality of products, both imported and locally manufactured, through a mechanism for compliance with technical regulations in order to assure safety , protect health , and safeguard the environment from ecologically hazardous goods.

5. Establish and maintain a national laboratory for measurements as a reference for national measurement in line with regional and international standards.

6. Establish and maintain testing laboratories for conformity with the technical regulations and compliance with standards for conformity certificates , quality and conformity marks.

7. Administer and operate a quality assurance and laboratories accreditation system.

8. Monitor the calibration of measurement equipment, and organize legal and industrial metrology inspections.

9. Establish and develop Standards Information center which will act technical enquiry and WTO/TBT Enquiry point.

10. Spread awareness on the importance of standardization and application of technical regulations and promote the services of the directorate in this respect.

11. Provide training services in all standardisation related activities.

12. Promote the Metrology on the regional and international level.

13. Coordinate with other regional, Arab and international standards organization in development and implementation of standards, in particular with Gulf Standardisation Organisation (GSO) for GCC countries and the Arab Organisation for Industrial Development and Mining (the Arab Centre for Standards & Metrology) and International Organisation for Standardisation.
